I’ve been telling myself that I need to write more. Then I saw this. Challenge accepted! Bit late on the take up, but once things settle down a bit next week, I’m on it. And that includes making up for the topics I’ve missed so far…

Bit late with this one, but HAPPY NAIDOC 2012.
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year the theme celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy.
For me this years NAIDOC has been a bit bittersweet. On one hand, there seems to be an abundance of events this year and it’s great to see an explosion in the sharing of stories of life, excellence, and culture through social media. On the other hand, a dark cloud set in over many of us last week with the passage of the “Stronger Futures” legislation.
Personally, I have been a bit down and disillusioned by that last fact. I never thought in my lifetime I could honestly see so many things go backwards with regards to Indigenous rights. It’s disheartening & it’s kept me from writing anything on NAIDOC until now. Especially given the theme for this year. But, I draw strength from my brothers and sisters, Aunts and Uncles that keep on fighting on. MY heroes, that inspire me and help my refocus. And as always, I turn to my music.
Tonight I caught the new clip from The Last Kinection. Find A Way is one of my favourite tracks off the Next of Kin album, and now we have a clip for it. And as they say:
FIND A WAY OR MAKE ONE!!!
If you’re looking for something to do this NAIDOC I recommend checking out the NAIDOC website for info NAIDCO and events around the country. For some inspiration, check out the ABC Open Dreambox project, the IndigenousX twitter account and Deadly Bloggers.
THIS is a HIGHLY recommended read, not just for our young mob, even though it’s aimed at them. Fred Leone AKA Rivals MC from Impossible Odds posted this KILLA rant in the wake of the stuff that’s been happening up in Musgrave. You don’t have to agree with it all, but something HAS to change!! READ IT!!!
I don’t get how our Sacred Circle’s, Customs or Protocols or Lor when described in the courier mail or elsewhere in the media always seem to be in inverted commas. e.g. today’s courier mail “Sacred Circle” This typifies the belittling and racists assumptions by media and certain parts of…
The Dreamers Design
Creative products celebrating Aboriginal culture. The Dreamers Design is a collective of like minded Indigenous creatives, passionate about finding new ways to promote Aboriginal culture.
The First Line of Defence tee design is a collaboration between Penny Smallacombe and Jessica Johnson. It’s the beginning of a range that honours our Aboriginal warriors of the 1800 period. It is also hoped that the designs will encourage further interest in our past leaders. The designers are currently in consultation with the various communities to seek permission to use these warriors names.

Really good article on how anti-capitalist movements can totally miss the point by reaffirming colonial occupation and the dispossession of Indigenous peoples.
written by Jessica Yee
“Let me be clear. I’m not against ending capitalism and I’m not against people organizing to hold big corporations accountable for the extreme damage they are causing. Yes, we need to end globalization. What I am saying is that I have all kinds of problems when to get to “ending capitalism” we step on other people’s rights – and in this case erode Indigenous rights – to make the point. I’m not saying people did it intentionally but that doesn’t even matter – good intentions are not enough and good intentions obviously can have adverse affects. This is such a played out old record too, walking on other people’s backs to get to a mystical land of equity. Is it really just and equitable when specific people continue to be oppressed to get there? And it doesn’t have to be done! We don’t need more occupation – we need decolonization and it’s everyone’s responsibility to participate in that because COLONIALISM AFFECTS EVERYONE. EVERYONE! Colonialism also leads to capitalism, globalization, and industrialization. How can we truly end capitalism without ending colonialism? How does doing things in the name of “America” which was created by the imposition of hierarchies of class, race, ability, gender, and sexuality help that?”
(Also, I’ve just been reading Feminism for Real: Deconstructing the Academic Industrial Complex of Feminism, which is edited by Yee and has lots to say about colonialism and racism within broader feminist movements and exciting articles that go beyond that/came before).
