Keating’s Redfern Address - 20 years on

Today marks 20 years since former Prime Minister Paul Keating’s Redfern Address (International Human Rights Day). Still one of THE greatest speeches in Australian politics in my opinion. I can remember including this speech as part of my Yr 12 English scrapbook (yes, I am that old, it was made a few years before) and being totally blown away by its content. This speech is one of the reasons Keating will be one of the few pollies that hold a special place in my heart. This speech also gave me a bit of hope that things would get better in my lifetime. Then came Howard… Anyway, 20 years on, unfortunately not much has changed. If anything things went 50 years backwards. This speech is just as important now as it was then. If you haven’t ever watched or listened to it, you should.

The First Line of Defence tee design is a collaboration between Penny Smallacombe and Jessica Johnson. It’s the beginning of a range that honours our Aboriginal warriors of the 1800 period. It is also hoped that the designs will encourage further interest in our past leaders. The designers are currently in consultation with the various communities to seek permission to use these warriors names. Check out the Dreamers Design website and facebook.
